Are Video Game Consumers art collectors?
Simple question.
The worst answer ever.
Just stop at "The game isn't fun" if that is the question asked. It is rude to try to make someone care about your feelings of something being important as art. It is rude to the people you are trying to persuade and rude to the artist. Art is made for an audience that seeks it out, without bias and open as a blank canvas to the experience. Art isn't made to be passed on like an oral tradition, tainted by bias with every retelling and interpretation.
I know people that view certain games as art want these experiences to keep being made, but art isnt commerical and video games like Death Stranding have big commercial budgets. It is amazing that Kojima convinced a publsiher to throw AAA money at an indie idea. The fact that there is a second one is a miracle (and honestly only possible because of the destructive influence Kojima earned, and is probably burning through, with Metal Gear).
But ultimately as a fan of the game, it is responsible to respect that it is niche. Film critics aren't trying to convince people to watch Salo, because they know it is a miracle the film exists at all. It isnt a commercial venture and it shouldn't be encouraged as one or try to be replicated. Art is only meaningful if the artist does it with meaning. It loses meaning when other artists make derivative pieces.
You are in your rights to like Death Stranding, but dont try to encourage other people to like it. Like Salo, encouraging people to experience something they may have a strong aversion to is pushing people to find art distasteful.
