S.S. Metacritic
Saints Row (2022) scores are low. Reviewers pounded nails in it's coffin before the memorial.
Then Saints Row topped UK sales charts in it's first week, dethroning Horizon F. West on the PS5.
It also topped the Xbox digital sales charts.
Reviewers are horrible analysts.
Reviews that give scores/grades or awards are a dated, horrible tradition pulled from the aging and dying movie critic industry.
The algorithm killed the movie critic. It doesn't have to kill the video game journalist.
Unless they are also leakers. Leaking is a trend best left buried in the New Mexico missile testing zone.
Reviewers are not authors. They aren't even internet recipe bloggers. They do not need to tell me their feelings, opinions, or about their experiences. I am not buying a hard cover of their work and taking the jacket off to place it on my book shelf.
Nor is an algorithm is not a proper reviewer.
A proper reviewer is like a librarian.
They have a near reverence for the material, for the history, and for their library and it's patrons.
A librarian wants you to love reading, to respect the craft, and to respect the library.
A reviewer should want you to love games, respect the work, and respect the community spaces.
Reviewers are not heralds nor undertakers. Reviewers are custodians, record keepers, lore masters.
If they foster a love for games they will always have pilgrims.
If they foster descent they will only sink with the ship.
